Hi my name is Simone Vicentini (aka vizio360 or just vizio) , and I’m a software developer.
I’m Italian and I live in Scotland, why? Because I love the weather here … really!
I’ve been in the software industry for the past 9 years but I don’t consider myself an expert yet. There is always new stuff to learn!
I don’t have a degree, which I regret a bit now (at the time I wasn’t really focused on a career in the IT world), but I think I’m a good learner. I mostly develop using Action Script 3.0 but I started my career using C++ and Java (even though now I recognize that I was developing stuff in a really naive way), and I’m not scared to sit down and learn new languages/technologies.
My work experience started back in Italy working for Telenia Software s.r.l. which develops software to analyse PABX reporting data and managing Call Centres. I usually used C++/Java to create Windows and Web applications. The work was really interesting as for me it was my first experience in the software industry.
The most challenging part of it was when we had been asked to develop a Call Centre System on top of the open source PABX platform Asterisk. I had just built up experience in the PHP language (I worked for a couple of years in a Web Agency before going back to Telenia Software) and so I suggested developing the scripts in PHP. This probably sounds a bit strange but, at the time it was the quickest way , for me, to develop on the Asterisk platform, and also I wanted to push PHP a bit further. The result was impressive. The application was completely configurable so you were able to setup the decision tree you wanted for the oncoming calls, manage call transfers and see the status of the calls queue. Specifically to show the status of the calls queue I decided to get involved with Flash. This was more of a trial that turned out to be successful. By using Flash we were able to deliver a rich content application that ran in the most popular browsers (remember this was back in 2004).
If you can read Italian go here to find out more about that project: Telenia Software TVox
and here is a little preview of the flash client (as you can see the functionality is more important than the beauty ):
After my move to Scotland, which was caused by two factors, love and career (I was keen to develop my knowledge in the Flash Platform), I started working for Picsel Technologies ltd where I met some really interesting people who gave me the inspiration and motivation to improve my knowledge in software development.
My time at Picsel was extremely productive. I was introduced, for example, to proper Source Control Systems, exposed to proper software development cycles and a sort of Team management. At Picsel I was part of a small team which was asked to deliver a friendly and engaging UI to view and edit documents on the most popular smart phones (all this before Apple revolutionized the smart phone market ). To deliver that we were developing Flash AS2.0 applications targeting an in-house built Flash Player for Smart Phones.
Here is where I built up most of my experience using Flash, and also where I was introduced to the Flash community. It’s why I’m now trying to take an active part in the Flash/Software development community by maintaining this blog, as I see it as an important tool to share knowledge and to be honest I was bored waiting for other people to discover stuff and not contributing at least a little bit.
After Picsel I joined Yomego where I worked on a Virtual World with a fellow Picsel ex-colleague. Here I improved my knowledge and experience using Flash ActionScript 3.0. At Yomego I also got my first hands-on experience with an open source framework PureMVC and it’s during my time in Yomego that I started this Blog. Unfortunately the project we were working on is not available online for commercial reasons.
Right now I’m working at HuzuTech ltd in Glasgow, where we are building a Virtual World Platform but I cannot reveal more than that . I have to say that I’m really enjoying working at HuzuTech as we are a small energetic team of professionals. I’m also enthusiastic because we have adopted RobotLegs as our preferred AS3.0 framework and Git as our Source Control System.
We are going to launch our first implementation of the platform in the second quarter of 2011, and I really can’t wait!!!
I’m fascinated by maths, and one day I will start a hardcore maths course to satisfy my knowledge appetite in this field. I’m also really interested in team management and software development techniques.
Not to forget, I’m always interested in side projects, so feel free to contact me to discuss/evaluate ideas.
